I've watched Star Trek since I was very young. When I was a kid sitting bored out of my mind trying to do school I'd look out the window and daydream and fantasize about being in that world. Despite my parents' reservations about topics that didn't fit their worldview in many ways they supported me learning about anything and everything I wanted to. It's something I still try to hold onto to this day. I want to ask questions, I want to learn and discover and change and grow. In many ways, it feels like i was more made to live in the 24th century rather than the 21st.

Our world does not look kindly upon the principals that Star Trek upholds as its foundation. They aren't skills that are very practical on a resume. In general, our world is cruel, callous, and uncaring. Discoveries and exploration are often only valued if they can provide some gain for some company. While it's easy to take that in a nihilistic direction. I think Star Trek itself already has the answer to us in the now. Though we don't live in a world with the Federation, the principals that created it are ever present and always were.

The crew of the Enterprise could drop into 2026 and they would still find people here who already believe in the same principals the Federation does. They're the folks who work on iNaturalist, and openstreetmaps. Maintainers on wikis, researchers struggling by with rapidly dwindling funding. Artists, musicians, and in anyone who dares to learn and try more than what's given. It's dark right now sure, but Trek has always told us that wherever there is darkness, there is still that element of what makes us human shining there too. That one shining thread that connects us from one generation to the next.

Remember the song, for its what makes us human, the struggle the push to learn more and strive for better in spite of the constricting darkness. There have been many ships to bear the name Enterprise, and there will be many more to come.
